Since 1997, SAAM SMIT Towage Mexico has offered state-of-the art tugs that provide towing services along the Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of California. Operations were further expanded in 2003 to provide offshore services for Pemex – Mexico’s state-owned petroleum company.

To accommodate the growing needs of local ports, SAAM SMIT Towage continually increases, modernizes, and improves its fleet to meet market demands. Currently, SAAM SMIT Towage Mexico operates a total of 22 tugs from Lazaro Cardenas (Pacific Coast), and Altamira, Tampico, Tuxpan, and Veracruz (Gulf of Mexico). These tugs collectively comprise more than 880 tons of bollard pull.

SAAM SMIT Towage Mexico’s 11 Pemex contracts for offshore services are provided by 9 azimuth tugs that comprise over 850 tons of bollard pull. These tugs also include firefighting and salvage technology to deliver efficient and uninterrupted operations.

With over 300 employees, SAAM SMIT Towage Mexico is focused on recruiting Mexican crew members. Approximately 300 staff are operative personnel, 10% of which have been employed with SAAM SMIT Towage Mexico for more than 15 years. Training and development are also frequently implemented and re-examined at the introduction of every new tug technology. All crew members, including administrative personnel, receive the appropriate instruction to ensure that any best practices developed comply with quality standards.

To effectively establish security, health, environment, and quality practices, Saam Smit Towage Mexico maintains industry standard certification in ISPS (security), ISM (health and environment) and ISO 9001:2008 (quality). Policies established in SAAM SMIT Towage Mexico’s ISM manual have resulted in zero environmental incidents, and SHE-Q (safety, health, environment and quality) key performance indicators are continually improved upon year after year.
