SMIT Tapeba helps to rescue a humpback whale

On 17th October 2017 the tugboat SMIT Tapeba helped to rescue a humpback whale that was beached on Barra Velha beach, close to our Itajaí Branch, in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Many locals and attendees were present at the beach to assist one of the largest aquatic mammals known.

Mr. Omar, the Captain of the SMIT Tapeba, who was in charge on the day, was enthusiastic and emotional about helping the whale to swim back to the ocean.

“It was an unique experience! Me and my crew were touched with this cause and were glad to participate in this rescue.”

It was a seven hour operation from the tugboat mobilization to completion and besides the atypical operation all the safety and environmental procedures were adhered to accordingly.
